The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as an integral and essential component of health. Mental health does not only mean the absence of illness or disorder but can also include a state of well-being where an individual realizes their abilities, copes with the stresses of life, and is able to function within multiple environments while making a contribution to their community. In spite of age differences, research shows that American children are diagnosed with mental illness at similar rates to Americans aged 18 and older. This means that children are being diagnosed with mental illnesses just like teenagers and adults are.
In simpler terms, mental health can be described as a state of an individual’s psychological, emotional, and social well-being. In order to assist individuals with mental health difficulties, early interventions are key in ensuring mild symptoms do not worsen and make recovery difficult later on in the individual’s life.
What is a mental disorder?
Mental illnesses or mental disorders are patterns or changes in thoughts, emotions, or behavior that can impact an individual’s ability to function in different areas of their life. Mental illness may make it difficult for children and adolescents to learn, function within certain settings, and adequately cope with their emotions. Children can also develop similar mental health conditions as adults although their symptoms may differ.
How are mental disorders diagnosed?
What is mental health?
Mental health professionals utilize psychological assessments to determine if an individual has a mental disorder. To receive a diagnosis, the client’s family history, medical history, individual development, and history of symptoms are reviewed so as to determine if the symptoms are consistent with a specific mental disorder. Currently, mental health professionals utilize the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder - Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Even when children and adolescents display symptoms consistent with specific mental disorders, it does not always mean they have a mental illness. There are many free educational and informational resources on mental health and illnesses available on the internet and social media . However, psychological assessment from a licensed psychologist is necessary to confirm whether or not a person has a mental health disorder.
Why is early identification important?
Many adults who currently have mental health disorders often displayed symptoms in their early childhood that were either not seen or addressed. Hence, it is important to be familiar with the warning signs of mental illness in young people. Early identification of such disorders, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment of emotional or behavioral disturbances can help reduce suffering for young individuals and their families and may prevent more severe and lasting problems in the later stages of their life.
